The Windows

San Francisco Clothing's window displays were truly a window into the world of the store: the clothing, inspiration, and values.

The Partmans championed the shopping experience offered in a physical store. Howard's window displays—part exhibit, stage set, and tableaux vivant—enriched that special experience.

The art of the window display, practiced by many now well-known twentieth-century artists, including Salvador Dalí, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Sari Dienes, and Andy Warhol, can create, as one designer said, “a bridge from the seriousness of museums to the paper and string of everyday life.”
